Day 116: I Heart Making Solids!

When I first started making baby food, I got this deep rush of excitement. I don’t know how to explain it, but it just felt so great to have a part providing Abby with nourishment. (I think it may have something to do with the fact that I’ve had many booby fails with breast milk production.)

So like anything I get really into, I start obsessing…reading everything I can on it…spending hours online trying to find the latest gadgets. When I came across the Babycook from Beaba I was in awe. I mean I had tried using my blender to make sweet potatoes, but it just didn’t seem to work that great. I couldn’t get the right consistency for a first food for Abby. So when I saw that the Babycook was designed specifically for the purpose of making baby food, I had to try it.
When it first arrived, I studied the directions so much…not b/c it was difficult, but b/c I wanted to make sure I got it all just right for Abby. I was able to get a couple test runs in before actually making food for Abby in order to prime it.
The first food I decided to make for Abby was pears. And b/c the book told me how much water to use, it was pretty easy to figure out how to make them perfectly. You see, the blending container has the measurement numbers 1, 2, and 3 on it. You just put the amount of water you need…for pears it was 2…and then you pour that water into the reservoir. There’s no guesswork that way.

(Note:  My hair normally does not look like this…I just got back from my “I’m going back to work and want to pretend I’m feeling good so I’m gonna get an expensive haircut” adventure, before these pictures where snapped….usually my hair is curly.)

I got such a rush when I was done blending the pears b/c it matched the consistency you would find in jars of baby food. I had this big grin on my face and looked up to see if my husband would laugh at the ridiculous giddy expression I had…luckily he was distracted by Abby’s cuteness.
The second food I made was squash. I felt like a pro at this point. Once I prepared the veggie, I put the right amount of water into the reservoir, put the squash in the cooking/reheating/defrosting basket, and set it to go.

One great thing that helped me to make the squash was the fact that b/c you put the food in the basket, which goes inside the blending container, there is space below the basket to catch all the water that does not get steamed off. B/c squash does not naturally have a lot of water content like the pears did, I was able to save this extra water and reincorporate it as I needed for blending in order to get the right consistency for Abby.

Another great feature is the spatula that you can insert through the loops on the side of the basket.  This is so that you don’t burn your hands while removing the food before siphoning off the water.

I also tried out defrosting some frozen baby food. The instructions say to use a glass jar to put the food in. I happened to have a small one that I saved from some relish and it fit perfectly inside the basket. B/c I was only defrosting a small amount, since Abby doesn’t eat a whole lot right now, I just kept my eye on it to make sure it wasn’t overdone. And it worked perfectly. This is great b/c my mind is always other places and I don’t always remember to take food out to defrost the night before I need it. And steaming to defrost is way better than microwaving so that nutrients aren’t lost.
Overall, I’m so glad I got the Babycook. Being a new mom and having limited time to hone my baby food making skills is overwhelming at times. But now that I have the Babycook, I feel more relaxed b/c I just have one kitchen item I need to use to do all the work. I don’t have to mess with pots and pans and blenders and bowls. It makes clean up with my limited time so much easier.
And something that I totally plan on getting once Abby gets older and can experiment with more foods is the Babycook book. That way I can constantly change things up and keep exposing Abby to nutritious goodies in different ways.

I’ve been making my own baby food, but I’ve just been using my mini-prep. Its getting the job done, but I’m a gadget person so I’ve been wondering how good these were. Does the recipes it come tell you how to adjust the ingredients to get different consistencies? Or is that something you just play with by adding more water?

    Good job on the review!

I LOVE making my own baby food! It is so much fun and once I got the hang of it I really enjoyed it. And I like knowing that I am making it and know what is going in it. I have been using a regular food processor but the thing you have looks really cool.
