Day 120: "Pssst…I Love You!"

If you read yesterday’s post, you know that I had a hard working momma week.  Friday’s at our school, though, are for meetings and for academic intervention so it’s low key and I don’t have to stand up in front of hormonal teenagers trying to help them figure out the difference between summarizing a short story and analyzing a short story.  Once the meetings are done and the students leave, I have some down time.

I opened up this book that I got from the public library to start reading the short story The Handsomest Drowned Man to prep for class next week.  As I was leafing through the pages to find the story, I came across a small piece of paper, and on it was scribbled, “Pssst…I Love You!” (I wish I snapped a picture of the note for this post, but I’m there’s just no time right now.)  And well you know what I did.  I smiled!  Just the day before a teacher saw me briefly smile and made sure to let me know that it was nice to see me smile again.  (What she didn’t know was that it was more of a sarcastic smile, but a smile nonetheless.)

It makes me wonder about the person who the note was written for.  It makes me wonder about the person who wrote it.

At first I wanted to take it out of the book and hold on to it b/c of the small amount of joy it brought me.  But then I thought, what if that note was placed there in the hopes of bringing smiles to whomever found it…w/o any intention of making sure it found it’s way to a specific someone.  Perhaps it was just there to help as many people as possible.

It made me think of how much those around me love and care about me.  It made me think that I bet my husband would whisper those words to me during the work day if he could.  It made me think that with every smile Abby shoots my way, she is probably thinking those thoughts for me.

And you know, I could totally be reading way too much into it.  It could simply be someone’s bookmark that they forget to remove before returning the book to the public library and is forever tearing apart their room looking for the last note the love of their life wrote them.  Who knows.  (And that could be still reading too much into it.)

Small things, like finding a note like this, help to bring clarity my way.  Clarity to help erase my gut negative reactions, which cause me to have too many no good very bad days.  Not saying that I’m perfect and will reaction to situations perfectly all the time, but enough clarity to try to think through them a little more.

So I’ll remember that little piece of paper and leave it in the book, in the hopes it can bring a smile to someone else’s face one day.

How cool to find a note like that. Whether it was meant for you originally or not, just the fact that it served to brighten your day a bit is a good thing.

That is so cute! I had someone buy my food in a drive thru lane once. It made me smile the rest of the day. Stuff like that is so special – I love paying-it-forward.

Very cool note and story! You reminded me that we can find joy in simple, seemingly small things. I love how you did that with the note :)

You know what? I love that you’re reading so much into this little note. What you wrote actually brought a tear to my eyes. Just thinking about the people in our lives that we love, and who love US. That little note has inspired me to hide one in my husbands office somewhere :)

Wow- that’s a fun surprise! I have been getting books from the library recently that specifically ask you to sign your name on the front cover- I think that’s always a fun thing too. You wonder if those other people loved the book as much as you did. :)

I see that this post was from the beginning of May. I sure hope that the little note reminded you how sweet life is when you’re wondering why it’s not. I hope that little note made May a more special month. And I hope that one day you, too, will leave a little note in a book for someone and make their day, or their week, or maybe even their month!

Congratulations on this marvelous day with SITS, and enjoy all the fun. I look forward to reading more in your blog too.

Maybe before school is out, as a last ditch effort to convince teens that awesomeness is possible you can ask them to write a tiny note of encouragement and put it in their textbook for the kids next year.

    Pay it forward!

How sweet! The only thing I’ve ever found in a library book was a pair of concert tickets for a few days earlier. And that didn’t bring me a smile or anything, I just felt bad for whoever lost their tickets and couldn’t go to the concert!
