Day 144: Help a Curvy Momma Out!

Growing up in S. Florida, I was always in a bathing suit up until the point of becoming self conscious of my body, which was probably around Freshman in high school era.  I mean I couldn’t wait until the Summer came and at day camp I knew I would get to swim every day unless it was thundering and lightening.  I was even on a swim team for a brief moment.  And b/c of this, even though I live in the Pacific Northwest where not every home has a swimming pool, it is imperative that Abby get used to the water.  I want her to be a little fishy like I was growing up.  :::crosses fingers she doesn’t deal with body image issues like I did…wait, she is a girl :( :::

So on June 4th, I will be ready to go on the computer to sign her up for the summer session of swim lessons at the YMCA.  I can’t wait!

But what this really means, though, is that I will have to be in the pool with her…EEEEK!!!!  I freaking need a bathing suit.

The first part of me cringes in thoughts of poor body image.  But since becoming a mom of a little girl, I’ve started to realize that I cannot be this way I cannot be this way all the time.  I need to teach Abigail to love herself, no matter what shape or size she may be.  So I’m sucking it up and putting a bathing suit on and not caring trying not to care what others will think of me in it.

This is the issue, though…I’m super duper picky when it comes to things I wear.  I need to try it on and look at it from all sorts of views.

When I’ve seen posts from other new mommies trying to get into shape and choosing a bathing suit as motivation, I see pictures of lots of Victoria Secret types of suit.  Well, that in no way shape or form is what I’m looking for.  I’m just under 5’1″ and weigh 165 on a good day.  I’ve got junk in the trunk, a natural muffin top, some back fat, and some cellulite.  So what I’m looking for is a suit that covers my back.  And I’m thinking it should be dark colored and possibly with print to hide all the extra curves I have.

Nope.  This is not the part of the post where I show you some pictures of options and have you tell me what your favorite one is…cause that’s what I’ve seen a bunch of other mommy bloggers do and I’m thinking you might think that’s what I’m gonna do.

I just really need your help as to where to even start.  What stores do you recommend?  What brands do you recommend?  And if you could throw a little confidence dust my way, I would totally appreciate it.

Swim Lessons begin the last week in June, so I’m hoping 1 month to figure this out should be a good amount of time for this working momma.

TIA!

(Oh, and don ‘t forget to leave a comment for @emmie_bee as to what she should blog about next week as a guest blogger for me. )

Swimsuits really are the devil. My only suggestion is to go for a sporty style/brand. They have some really great styles and I happen to think they are more comfortable. The ones they sell that are “fashionable” are just that… for looks. And who the hell buys a bathing suit for looks? Teenagers. Anyway, I know they sell Speedos brand as well as Nike and Reebok suits at Dicks sporting goods stores, where you should be able to try them on.

Good luck mama! And good for you for doing this for Abby and actively thinking of her future self image! You rock!

In my opinion you have to be smaller to wear a one piece than a two piece so dont rule out a tankini or something!

i totally recommend lands end…great options, even suits that hide specific things! and i agree with emily, a tankini is a great option. with my 8 month old in tow, i will be going to the pool, even with this less than desirable body…and it will be in a lands end tankini.

I ditto Land’s End. Their suits were actually just featured on MSN for being good for curves.

I (shudders) must face the suit too.

Hey,new follower here, saw you featured today :) I like JCPenney suits, they arent made for 16yr old girls. Too lazy to post a pic, but these seem comfy…I also agree that 2 pieces is the way to go. Good Luck!

Hands down the best place to shop for suits (and undergarments) is Bare Necessities.
