Day 210: I’m Getting Crafty

When I was younger, I used to heart crafts.  I mean when given the choice as to what activities I wanted to do in summer camp, I always chose arts and crafts for the morning.  (When I got older, I chose tennis b/c of all the cute boys.)  But as I’ve grown up, I’ve forgotten about this crafty side…until now.  I’m trying to get back into it so that when Abigail is a bit older, we can have some mommy daughter bonding time.  Oh, and I have to say that I’m getting back into it for me too…to relax…to be creative…to just be.

So about a month ago, a fellow mommy blogger posted this and it got me thinking that I totally had not fallen through with putting Abby’s name up on the wall…you know b/c everyone does it…right?

Kristi Maristi explained how she covered foam letters with scrapbook paper to put the ABC’s on the wall for her cutie MJ.  It was economical.  It was creative.  It was adorable.  So off I went to Michael’s to purchase all I needed.

After I snagged up the letters I needed in foam, I saw the wooden letters and decided since I was only doing Abby’s name, that I would put the foam back and go for the goods.  Of course they didn’t have the last letter I needed…an “L,” but I decided to just come back and get it when it was in stock.  (Two weeks later and a trip to another Michael’s and I finally had my “L.”)

Deciding on the scrapbook paper was daunting.  There were so many choices and at first I was trying to pick out single sheets that went together.  But b/c I’m indecisive, I found a large book filled with copious amounts of paper that all had the same color scheme….I just had to pick the right ones.

I decided to go with picking 7 different designs b/c I just heart being different…you know?  But of course b/c I obsess, I had to make sure they flowed in a great order.  I probably changed my mind 7 different times, but this is what I went with.

Then after several attempts and figuring out how to trace the letters and cut them out so they would fit right (It took me a minute to remember I needed to trace the letter backwards to get the design to be the right way I wanted it.)

And after asking several workers at Michael’s what would be the best adhesive to glue the paper on to the wood letter, it was decided that I should use Mod Podge, with a matte finish.

And after three coats on top of the glued on letter, I was done…well almost as I was still waiting for my “L” to come in.

Finally, this week, I got around to putting them up on the wall.

I think they are unique and different and not for everyone.  But I heart them and hopefully when Abigail becomes conscious of this design choice, she will heart them too.

So now I’m all inspired to continue to be crafty, but I’m not sure if my bank account is.  Perhaps I should just focus on completing a scarf I started a couple years ago.  That sounds like a good plan.
