Day 216: The one where Abby gives Momma a break

Yesterday afternoon I was starting to think that we were on our way to day three with no afternoon nap.  I started freaking that at the age of 9 months, Abigail decided she no longer needed it.  She was super fussy in the afternoon too.  I really needed her to take a nap.  I needed a break.  I put her in the jumperoo and a few minutes later I saw she was leaning her head back.  When I got closer, I saw her eyes were closed.

Day 215: Don’t Forget To Breathe-Part I

A little over eight and a half years ago, my grandfather passed away from Cancer.  I was a senior at NYU.  We joked how he was kind enough to pass over winter break so I wouldn’t have to leave school.  About a week after his passing, I went back to school.

Numb.

I started a class called Writing the Human Experience.  We had an assignment.  “Tell a story,” my professor said.  So for a few nights, I got in my pajamas, slid under the covers, perched my laptop on my legs, and I wrote and cried and wrote and cried.  I ended up with 20 pages and 7 parts.  I called it “Don’t Forget to Breathe.”

Here is part 1…. [...]

Day 214: I’m Trying to Start a Movement…Blog Hop Style

If you saw yesterday, I’ve teamed up with Tracy from Sweet Harper for a Back to School Blog Style Series, which will run every Monday during the month of August.  We’ve decided, though, that we would love to turn the last Monday over to you by hosting a blog hop.  Here’s the background as to how the idea of this blog hop came to be:

A couple weeks ago, I was watching the new series on MTV called If You Really Knew Me. It’s where they have a Challenge Day at schools whose students are struggling to be themselves, to accept others for their difference, to treat others with respect, to empathize with those less fortunate, and really, they are struggling to rise to their full potentials.

What Challenge Day did was bring students together from all walks of life, and they had opportunities to bond over silly games to break the ice in order to really delve into the depths of their souls to share with one another, “If you really knew me….” [...]

Day 213: Back to School Blog Style…Tips for Success

Welcome to the Back to School Blog Style Series!  “Metta” from Mommyhood at Thirty, and Tracy from Sweet Harper are teaming up to help get the school year off to a great start.  So…let’s break the ice!  Just in case you don’t know us, here’s the lowdown… [...]

Day 212: I’m taking a break.

Day 211: The one where she doesn’t insist on eating books

Despite the fact that I’m an English teacher, I think most parents want to expose their kids to books.  (I wish I could say all, but being a teacher I can tell that some kids are just never read to as children, which is why I sometimes read to my students.) Of course we have a wide variety sitting on Abigail’s book shelf.  For the longest time, though, she would insist on swiping the book out of my hands to nom on the pages.  A couple of days ago, I thought I’d give it a shot since it had been a while since I read to her…I have had  lots of trepidations b/c I want to preserve her books, and not have them torn to shreds. [...]

Day 210: I’m Getting Crafty

When I was younger, I used to heart crafts.  I mean when given the choice as to what activities I wanted to do in summer camp, I always chose arts and crafts for the morning.  (When I got older, I chose tennis b/c of all the cute boys.)  But as I’ve grown up, I’ve forgotten about this crafty side…until now.  I’m trying to get back into it so that when Abigail is a bit older, we can have some mommy daughter bonding time.  Oh, and I have to say that I’m getting back into it for me too…to relax…to be creative…to just be. [...]

Day 209: Pure Bliss

This past week has been on the hot side and when you don’t have central AC you’ve got to get creative about how to cool down.  I think Abigail was having fun with creativity.  What do you think?

Post Script:  My bloggy friend, lawmomma, is raising money to help a good cause of a Momma with two little boys who both have Batten Disease.  So please do me a favor and go check out the Gradys’ story and donate.  Just $5 can mak a difference.  Click HERE.

Day 208: I Heart Most Things Retro

NOTE: This post was brought to you by using two spaces after each period.

About a week and a half ago, I rushed over to Smonk You:  A Story about Being a Dad, to check out which lovely lady he had guest blogging for him.  To my delight, it was Morgan, from the818.

Morgan and I have loads of things in common.  We both went to NYU.  We are both Jewish.  We both married gentiles.  We both have adorable little girls.  We both live on the left coast.  And after reading her guest post, I can add another commonality between us.  We both heart double spaces after periods.

I found this out in Kenny’s introduction to Morgan when she said that like his wife, she too is a fan of the double space.

Then a comment war and a tweeting war ensued over double spacing after a period. [...]

Day 207: Screw You Anxiety

So over the past couple of weeks, I’ve noticed an increase in my anxiety level.  And on three of those occasions, I was on the verge of full blown anxiety attacks.  The third time this happened, I was feeling claustrophobic and needed some air.  Fortunately for me, my mom is in town so it was easy for me to step outside and breath in some fresh air.

This sitting outside was when I started to think about the fact that it’s been happening more often lately…the panic that is. [...]
